Huskers Set for Exhibition Finale vs. Hastings

After working its way to a 20-point victory in its exhibition opener last week, the Nebraska Cornhusker basketball team completes preseason play this week when it plays host to in-state foe Hastings College on Tuesday, Nov. 10.

The game will tip off at 7:06 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center and will be broadcast by the IMG Husker Sports Radio Network. Calling the action this week will be Kent Pavelka while former Husker letterwinner Andy Markowski joins the broadcast to add color commentary. The game will be heard for free on Huskers.com and on the full Husker Sports Radio Network.

Nebraska enters its final exhibition game looking to tune up on both ends of the court. The Huskers were solid offensively as they scored 86 points in their first contest this season despite putting 10 players on the court in a Nebraska uniform for the first time ever.

However, NU shot just 47.4 percent from the field, including only 39.3 percent in the first half. Nebraska was also 2-of-13 for the game from 3-point range, but made up for the lack of long-range accuracy by hitting 73.2 percent at the free throw line as Nebraska took 41 attempts (30 made).

Defensively, the Huskers held Arkansas-Fort Smith to 43.9 percent shooting while NU added 32 rebounds on the defensive end (48 overall). But UAFS did hold a 12-4 advantage in fast break points and scored 18 points off turnovers as Nebraska turned the ball over 17 times.

Senior guard Ryan Anderson started his final season in a solid way, scoring 18 points in 21 minutes while adding five boards. Freshman Christian Standhardinger came off the bench to provide a spark, hitting 9-of-11 attempts from the free throw line to score 17 points in 19 minutes while adding seven boards.

Standhardinger was not the only youngster making his presence felt as redshirt-freshman Jorge Brian Diaz started strong by posting a double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds) while freshman Brandon Ubel had seven points and four boards (three offensive) in 16 minutes after joining Diaz in the starting lineup.

Overall, 11 players scored for the Huskers in last week’s exhibition while 13 had at least one rebound. Nine players were also in the game for at least 10 minutes as fourth-year coach Doc Sadler experimented with several different combinations of lineups.
