Stephenson Earns NCAA Gymnast of the Week

Chris Stephenson claimed NCAA Gymnast of the Week, announced on Tuesday, becoming just the second Husker to earn the award following in the footsteps of Wyatt Aycock. Stephenson, a junior on the Nebraska men’s gymnastics team, adds this award to his Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honor that he earned on Monday.

Stephenson, Castro Clinch Event Titles Against OU

Chris Stephenson and Antonio Castro claimed individual event titles with season-high scores in the Huskers home opener against No. 1 Oklahoma on Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Stephenson earned the floor title with 14.75, while Castro grabbed his on pommel horse with 14.80. This was the second consecutive meet that Castro claimed an event title, after the Pinecrest, Fla., native earned the vault title at the West Point Open on Jan. 14. Stephenson also won the all-around with a score of 82.95.

Huskers Add Illinois Transfer

Nebraska men’s gymnastics Coach Chuck Chmelka announced Friday that Illinois transfer Austin Lober has joined the team as a walk-on. The Albuquerque, N.M., native has four years of eligibility left and will be able compete this season for the Huskers.

Team finals and individual preliminaries will take place Jan. 13, while the individual finals will take place Jan. 14. Competition begins at 6 p.m. on both nights.

After a top-seven national finish in 2016 and the program’s best finish since 1999, the Nebraska men’s gymnastics team is eager to build off that momentum in 2017. Nebraska hopes to set another milestone this season by advancing to the NCAA Team Finals for the first time since 1999 and finishing in the top six overall after missing the opportunity by .400 last season.
