Emotions will be running high Saturday at Memorial Stadium as Scott Frost begins his Husker coaching career.
At 11 a.m. on November 11, 2018, the world will mark the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended the hostilities of World War I. To commemorate this event, Memorial Stadium has designated a special POW/MIA chair. Each game this season, a decorated veteran of U.S. military service will take his or her post next to this unoccupied chair in honor of the more than 800 Nebraskans lost in combat, but whose fate remains "UNKNOWN."
As his senior year at Lincoln Southeast High School came to an end, Jerald Foster had numerous offers from many prestigious football programs, including Florida, Georgia and UCLA. Being rated as the top prospect in the state of Nebraska by Rivals.com, and ranked among the nation's top 25 offensive guards, will bring that kind of attention.
After a morning of football practice in full pads and helmets, athletes leave practice in the indoor football field of the Hawks Championship Center. One of the last to walk out is a 6-foot-4, 310-pound player. Tanner Farmer, a senior offensive lineman from Highland, Ill., is dripping wet. He gets a slice of watermelon and chats with a few other teammates before being approached for an interview.
The Nebraska football walk-on program was an integral part of the Huskers' National Championship years in the 1990s, and continues to produce high-quality starters more than 20 years later. Unlike other programs around the country, Nebraska has a sense of pride when it comes to walk-ons, and treats the process as a building block to a successful career.
When Nebraska launches its football season Saturday night against Akron, the reverberation of Memorial Stadium will be as loud as ever.
Huskers Ready for Akron
A matchup of two of college football's winningest programs for four straight years and a return of Iowa as the opponent in the regular-season finale are among the highlights of Nebraska's 2022-25 Big Ten football schedules.
