Nebraska was the nation's first college football team to have instant replay boards at an exclusive college venue back in 1994.

In 2006, as part of the Memorial Stadium Expansion project that added the Tom and Nancy Osborne Athletic Complex and more than 6,500 seats to the North end of the stadium, HuskerVision opened a new era with the addition of a massive screen atop the North Stadium.

The new Mitsubishi screen replay screen will be one of the largest in any college stadium in the United States, measuring 117-feet 7 1/8-inches wide by 33-feet-7 3/16-inches high, roughly five times the width of the original screens inside Memorial Stadium. Overall, approximately 10 of the old replay boards would fit inside Nebraska's new screen.

HuskerVision also replaced the two original screens with two similar-sized screens on the Southeast and Southwest corners of the stadium. The two screens in the South are slightly larger than the originals, measuring 24-feet wide by 21-feet high.

All three of the new Mitsubishi screens utilize high brightness LED technology. The North screen will contain 3,670,016 LEDs. Mitsubishi uses a unique signal process that utilizes a quad dot pattern systerm to provide extremely high resolution. The system will accept all graphic and broadcast signals, including HDTV.

HuskerVision will be able to run video on the entire viewing area of the North Stadium screen, and will also be able to segment the screen in various ways to show live action, statistics, graphics and advertising. While the new screen will contain scoring and game time information, conventional scoreboards will also be in place at field level in the Southwest and Northeast corners of the stadium.

The original HuskerVision screens stood 23-feet wide by 17-feet high (388 square feet), and each screen was formed by more than 90,000 lighting dots. These dots formed 5,632 lighting elements, units and module cabinets, plus video processing electronics manufactured by Mitsubishi Electronics. The cost of the system was paid entirely by commercial sponsorships.

Beside the obvious advantage of viewing replays and game action on three huge screens, HuskerVision has helped create several other memorable moments at Memorial Stadium.

First, the screens are an important ingredient to one of the most dramatic team entrances in all of sports. Along with a 30,000 watt sound system, the HuskerVision screens help make "The Tunnel Walk" part of the atmosphere of Nebraska football.

HuskerVision's contributions to Memorial Stadium have not gone unnoticed by Nebraska fans. In a survey of season ticket holders, fans mentioned HuskerVision as one of the most worthwhile additions to Memorial Stadium in many years.

HuskerVision is housed in the state-of-the-art Michael Grace Production Studio located on the concourse level of West Stadium. Made possible by a generous donation in honor of former football player and NU Foundation fundraiser Michael Grace, this area includes office space to accommodate nine full-time employees and a staff of 25 student assistants. In addition, a broadcast quality control room, three non-linear editing rooms and a television production studio allow the HuskerVision staff to produce a multitude of video productions.

Last year, HuskerVision created more than 100 television shows, including the Husker football show, as well as coaches shows for men's and women's basketball, volleyball and  baseball.

This season, the Bo Pelini Husker Football Show will be broadcast statewide on Sundays. In addition, the Husker Volleyball Show will also be aired during the fall. During the basketball season, The Doc Sadler Show and the Husker Women's Basketball Show with Coach Connie Yori will be broadcast on a state-wide and regional basis. During the spring, the Husker Baseball Show with Mike Anderson is carried state-wide.

HuskerVision's duties also include the production of highlight tapes for all 23 varsity sports and running the video boards in the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The Devaney Center HuskerVision boards are nearly the same size in terms of square footage as the two smaller screens in Memorial Stadium.

The Devaney Center screens are 15 feet high and 26 feet wide, which makes their size compatable with the new HDTV wide screen format. These wide aspect ratio screens are part of a 162-foot wide display system on each end of the Devaney Center. The HuskerVision crew also produces and markets highlight tapes on each Nebraska football season. Over the past 10 years, more than 150,000 tapes have been purchased by NU football fans.
