Honors Continue to Roll in for Mergele
After leading Butler Community College to its second consecutive National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) championship last month, postseason accolades have continued to roll in for incoming Husker pitcher Regan Mergele.
Mergele, who will join the Huskers as a junior this fall, was named a first-team junior college All-American by three different organizations. On May 24, she was named the Fastpitch News NJCAA Division I Pitcher of the Year. On June 7, Mergele was recognized as a first-team All-American by the NJCAA Division I Softball Committee and by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Mergele earned NFCA All-America honors in each of her two seasons at Butler, as she was named a third-team All-American in 2016. Then on June 13, Mergele was named the NJCAA Division I Pitcher of the Year by the Division I Softball Committee.
Mergele was 29-0 with a 0.75 ERA this season, helping the Grizzlies (58-1) win their second straight national title. She was the NJCAA Division I Championship Most Outstanding Pitcher and ranked second among all NJCAA Division I pitchers in strikeouts per seven innings (10.6), third in ERA and sixth in wins. She ended her career ranked second all-time at Butler in wins (53), ERA (1.15) and strikeouts (330).
In her two-year career at Butler, Mergele compiled a 53-3 record with a 1.15 ERA and 330 strikeouts in 273.0 innings. She ended her junior college career with a personal 45-game winning streak.
