Huskers Set for Greeno/Dirksen Invitational

By NU Athletic Communications

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska cross country team is set to co-host the 28th annual Greeno/Dirksen Invitational at Pioneers Park on Saturday.

The meet is set to begin at 9 a.m. with the women’s race, and the ensuing men’s race is expected to conclude around 11 a.m.

The top Huskers from the Augustana Twilight were Mark Freyhof in sixth place (19:47.00) and Bonnie Smith in 13th place (18:15.35). Both the men’s and women’s team placed third in the meet.

“What I learned [from the meet] is a little about what to expect from the newcomers,” said Harris, who plans to run most of his Husker student-athletes in the meet this weekend. “The freshmen ran their first collegiate meets, so I got to see how they compete.”

Because the upcoming meet is at home, Harris hopes to have a home-field advantage.

“We ran over the course last week in training to learn the course,” Harris said. “We are excited about competing in our only home meet of the season.”

The top returning Huskers in last year’s Greeno/Dirksen Invitational were Austin Post in 30th with a time of 26:50.1 and Katrina Santiago with a time of 22:45.0. This year, Harris is looking for new leaders to step up.

“This meet will be important in determining the squad that goes to Indiana for the next competition [the Sam Bell Invitational],” said Harris.
