Lawrence, Kan. - The Nebraska combined-event athletes kicked off the Kansas Relays on Wednesday at Memorial Stadium. An impressive first day of competition concluded with the Huskers in the top two spots in the men's decathlon. Bjorn Barrefors stood in first place with a total of 3,836 points, and Teran Walford followed his lead in second with 3,669 points.

Barrefors and Walford started the day finishing first and second, respectively, in the 100 meters. Barrefors notched a time of 11.24, while Walford checked in with a personal-best time of 11.30. The duo went on to finish first and second in the long jump, as Barrefors came in first with a leap of 23-2 (7.06) and Walford was second with a personal-best jump of 21-7 1/4 (6.58).

Moving to the shot put, Barrefors recorded a throw of 43-1 1/2 (13.14) to take second, while Walford followed close behind in third-place after notching a personal-best throw of 39-0 1/2 (11.90). Continuing an impressive afternoon, Barrefors took first in the high jump with a leap of 6-6 1/4 (1.99), and Walford posted another personal best with a leap of 6-4 (1.93).

Walford completed his first day of competition with a PR in the 400 meters, posting a time of 49.93. He finished the afternoon with a personal-best mark in every event of the day. Barrefors took third in the 400 meters, recording a time of 51.87.

The men's decathlon is slated to continue tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. with the 110 meter hurdles.
