Huskers Bring Smiles to Lincoln Hospitals in Pre-Thanksgiving Outreach
In their annual pre-Thanksgiving community outreach event Wednesday, about 100 Nebraska football players visited four Lincoln hospitals to show their appreciation for the support they receive throughout the year.
"Our teams and our student-athletes have a lot to be thankful for around here," said Keith Zimmer, Nebraska's Associate Athletic Director for Life Skills. "Our student-athletes not only get great support from inside the Athletic Department, but also from the outside, including those who are spending their holidays in a hospital."
Husker players split up into four groups and visited Nebraska Heart Hospital, St. Elizabeth's Regional Medical Center, Bryan LGH East and Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital.
Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne said student-athletes get a lot of publicity and a lot of attention. "So it's a big deal when a Nebraska football player can visit someone who's hospitalized or in some type of difficult circumstance," Osborne said. "But really, it's about having a servant's heart and sharing with others. That's more important than anything."
