Lincoln – Nebraska soccer freshman forward Jaycie Johnson was named Big Ten Offensive Player and Freshman of the Week announced by the Conference office on Monday. She earned the honors after recording three goals and an assist after her first two collegiate matches. Johnson is tied for the conference lead with seven points after the opening weekend of play.
Johnson, out of Lee's Summit West High School, showed no signs of nerves as she notched five points in her Husker debut on Friday, including the final two NU scores en route to the 4-0 triumph over Southeast Missouri. On Sunday, Johnson had a hand in one of NU’s four second half goals in the 4-1 win over Cincinnati, as she earned a penalty kick goal with six shot attempts in the match. Her third goal of the year is tied for the conference lead.
The Lake Winnebago, Mo., native was an integral part of a high-powered Husker offense that led NU to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2005. Johnson recorded 12 shots, including seven on goal in 120 minutes of action in victories over Southeast Missouri State and Cincinnati.
Johnson is Nebraska’s first Big Ten Freshman of the Week selection and the first Husker since Morgan Marlborough in 2009, to earn both offense and freshman conference awards in the same week. The last Nebraska Offensive Player of the Week was Mayme Conroy, who received the honor last year on Oct. 8, after recording a hat trick at Wisconsin.
