Sheils Advances at U.S. Women's Amateur

Cleveland, Ohio - Former Nebraska women's golfer Madeleine Sheils defeated Sierra Brooks to advance to the second round of match play at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at The Country Club on Wednesday.

Sheils, who earned All-Big Ten honors as a senior for the Huskers in 2012, advanced to the round of 32 with a 3 & 1 victory over Brooks. 

Sheils, a four-time NGCA Scholastic All-American from Boise, Idaho, advanced to the match play portion of the tournament by posting rounds of 75 and 74 to close the stroke play portion of the event at 149 on the 6,512-yard, part-72 course at The Country Club on Tuesday.

Brooks from Sorrento, Fla., had posted the fifth-best score in stroke play with rounds of 72 and 68 to close at 140.

The U.S. Women's Amateur Championship is scheduled to continue through Sunday in Cleveland.
