Sheils Advances at LPGA Q-School
Former Nebraska women's golfer Madeleine Sheils fired a two-under-par 70 in the second round of Stage I at the LPGA Qualifying School on Wednesday in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Sheils, a four-year starter for the Huskers from 2008-09 through 2011-12 from Boise, Idaho, closed the second round in a tie for 25th (144) among the 227 players who advanced after the first cut. Wednesday's cut narrowed the field from 227 players to 80 players (top-70 with ties). She is nine strokes back of leader Moriya Jutanugarn, who sits at 135 after rounds of 69 and 66. Jutanugarn owns a one stroke lead over Jaye Marie Green (70-66-136) and Garrett Phillips (69-67-136).
Sheils entered the second round in a tie for 74th after shooting an opening-round 74 on the LPGA International's Legends Course (par 72, 6,468 yards) on Tuesday. Her strong performance on the LPGA International's Champions Course (par 72, 6,389 yards) on Wednesday moved her safely into the third round of Stage I qualifying. Sheils carries a four-stroke lead over 14 players who enter Thursday's third round in a tie for 67th at 148. Just eight strokes separate the No. 6 player (Rachel Rohanna, 140) and No. 80 in the field.
Sheils, who was a first-team All-Big Ten performer and advanced to the 2012 NCAA Central Regional for the Huskers as a senior, secured her spot in at least two more rounds of golf in Stage I Qualifying. The top-60 players and ties following four rounds of play will advance into Qualifying Stage II.
That 72-hole event will be held Oct. 9-12, at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla. The top 70 and ties from Stage II will advance into the final Qualifying Tournament Stage III.
The final Stage III Q-school will be contested over 90 holes Nov. 28 through Dec. 2, on both the Champions and Legends courses at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. Top finishers in the final stage will earn 2012 LPGA membership (total number of cards TBD) and all others who make the cut will receive Symetra Tour status.
