Jerry Murtaugh is one of the most prolific of Nebraska’s defensive greats.  An All-American and all-conference linebacker, Murtaugh set the NU record for most career tackles, a record that stood until 2004, when it was broken by current Tampa Bay Buccaneers starter Barrett Ruud.  After graduation, Murtaugh was signed by the New England Patriots, where he played for two years, until knee injuries ended his playing career.  Since then, what has he been doing? Who is Jerry Murtaugh?
I'm a very lucky man who has great kids, and grandkids, good health, and who fishes a lot with the grandkids. My parents were saints to have 10 of us, five boys and five girls.

What’s the most significant personal achievement or event that’s happened in your life since you left Nebraska?
I started a non-profit organization nine years ago called GOAL.  I put wellness programs in the schools fighting obesity with our youth (

What’s the one thing you learned through your student-athlete experience at Nebraska that’s helped you the most?

Working with your teammates to achieve the goal we set out to do before the 1970 season. That means depending and trusting others to reach our goal?

What are you doing now?

I'm the C.E.O. of the GOAL Organization, the linebacker coach at Creighton Prep High School in Omaha for 12 years, and I fish a lot with my grandkids.
