Giehl got off to a tremendous start in the 2008-09 season. She won the 200-yard freestyle and placed second in the 500-yard freestyle in the team's first dual meet of the year against Illinois. She had six top-five finishes overall on the year, including five in the top three. Giehl set career-best times in the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard breaststroke at the Big 12 Championships. She earned first-team academic All-Big 12 accolades.

Giehl was a force in five of the six freestyle events as a freshman, finishing the year with a top-five team time in every freestyle event except the 50 yard, including the team's fastest 200-yard time (1:50.94). Nine of Giehl's 14 top-five finishes on the year were first-place finishes (with five coming in the 500-yard freestyle). Giehl finished 15th in the 200-yard freestyle at the Big 12 Championships, setting a career-best time in the process.

She was named a 2007 high school All-American in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle and was a first-team all-state selection. Her outstanding performances in four state meets led Fairview High School to three consecutive runner-up team finishes. Also a strong breaststroker, Giehl set the Boulder County 100-yard breaststroke record with a time of 1:08.98 in 2007. Following her career, she was named the Boulder Daily Camera's Swimmer of the Year and recognized by the Denver Post as a member of the All-Colorado team.
