St. Louis, Mo. - In a matchup of former Husker bowling greats, Cassandra Leuthold defeated Shannon Pluhowsky in the championship of the Women's Bowling Alliance (WBA) St. Louis Open over the weekend.

Leuthold, the 2010 National Collegiate Player of the Year, outscored Pluhowsky, 521-424, in the two-game total-pin match final to win, taking home a prize of $4,000. Leuthold, who was the NCAA Most Outstanding Player in leading the Huskers win the 2009 NCAA title, was also a four-time All-American during her Husker career.

"It was a tremendous experience competing against Shannon," Leuthold said. "She has a great background in bowling."

With tour stops all across the country, the Women's Bowling Alliance gives women a platform to compete professionally in bowling.

"I would love to compete in as many WBA events as possible," Leuthold said. "It gives us a great opportunity to compete professionally, and the more we compete, the better the WBA can become."

Pluhowsky, a three-time National Collegiate Player of the Year at Nebraska, did not go home empty handed, winning a prize of $2,000 with her second-place showing.
