Huskers Fall in 11 Innings to Oregon

Eugene, Ore. - The 14th-seeded Nebraska softball team was three outs away from the Women's College World Series before No. 3 Oregon produced the tying run in the top of the seventh and the winning run in the top of the 11th of a 4-3 extra-inning victory over the Huskers on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Ducks forced an if-necessary game for the right to advance to Oklahoma City. Oregon improved to 50-10 with the win, while the Huskers fell to 44-14 with the loss.

The Huskers led for most of the game, leading 1-0 after one inning and 3-1 after four innings. But single runs in the sixth and seventh forced extra innings. In the extra frames, neither team could break through until a bad-hop single on a rock-hard infield produced the winning run for Oregon in the top of the 11th.

Cheridan Hawkins was terrific in relief for the Ducks to earn the win. Hawkins (19-5) tossed 7.0 innings of two-hit, shutout relief with 11 strikeouts and no walks. She entered the game with Oregon trailing 3-1, but her work gave the offense time to come back.

And the Ducks did come back. A sixth-inning home run from Janelle Lindvall pulled Oregon within one before a bunt single and throwing error set the Ducks up with a runner on third and no outs in the top of the seventh. A Kaylan Howard RBI ground out then tied the game.

In the top of the 11th, a leadoff single and a walk put runners at first and second. Samantha Pappas then hit a potential inning-ending double play ball to freshman Alicia Armstrong at short, but the ball took a high bounce and nearly hit Armstrong in the face, finding its way into center field for an RBI single, Pappas' third hit of the game. Oregon produced 14 hits total in the game, including five infield singles aided by the hard surface.

Nebraska was held to just six hits in the loss. Senior Brooke Thomason was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while junior Tatum Edwards hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning.

After Oregon tied the game at 1-1 with only infield singles in the top of the second, Nebraska grabbed a 3-1 lead in the fourth. Senior Gabby Banda reached on a leadoff error and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Thomason then produced an RBI single to left to score Banda and give the Huskers the lead. Then with two outs, an errant throw following an infield single from freshman Hailey Decker allowed Thomason to score and give NU a 3-1 advantage.

That would be Nebraska's last run, as Hawkins came on and retired 21 of the 23 hitters she faced.

Tatum Edwards (30-9) took the loss for Nebraska, which fell to 44-14 on the year. Edwards allowed four runs (three earned) on a career-high 14 hits in a career-high 11.0 innings.
