Pelini Pleased with Huskersí Progress

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team practiced for two hours on the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice fields outside of the Hawks Championship Center on Wednesday in preparations for this weekend’s Spring Game.

Head Coach Bo Pelini spoke to the media after practice and said he thought the last two days were “really good practices.”

“I thought the competition was good,” Pelini said. “I just told the team, I really like the 14 practices we had up to this point. We went into this thing wanting to lay a foundation for the fall. I think we’ve done that. I think we’ve identified a lot of guys. I think we’ve identified a lot of areas we need to grow. I think we’ve identified areas where I think we are pretty strong.”

Pelini added that he thought the team was where they should be. He said he plans to be more “dialed back” in terms of how much football the team will show.

The format for Saturday’s Red-White Spring Game is offense vs. defense. Pelini said there will be a points system used that will be sent out to the media and possibly put on the scoreboard for the game.

“I haven’t done this format before, but it makes a lot of sense for where we are as a football team right now,” Pelini said.

In addition, Pelini said I-back Ameer Abdullah and defensive end Randy Gregory are not likely to see extended playing time.

“There are certain guys we want to protect that we don’t want to give a lot of reps to,” Pelini said. “If we were trying to field two teams right now, it wouldn’t happen. We have some guys out at certain positions. We’re thin at a couple positions. We don’t want kids in position to get hurt.”

Pelini also joked about the weather, saying it keeps changing.

“Every day I look,” Pelini said. “It looks like 100 percent rain and then 100 percent no rain. There’s half of a sun and half of a rain cloud. Usually I’ll just get Coach (Tom) Osborne down here and he can part the skies and we should be good to go.”

The Spring Game starts on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT and will be streamed live on BTN2Go. The Big Ten Network will show the game on a tape-delayed broadcast that night at 7 p.m.
