The HERO Leadership Breakfast is an annual event honoring student-athlete leaders from each varsity sport for providing excellent team leadership and volunteerism. Nominations are approved by Athletic/Academic Counselors and Head Coaches. HERO recipients are announced at a Leadership Breakfast every April featuring comments from the Athletic Director and those impacted by the good deeds of Husker student-athletes.

Former tracker and field and football student-athlete Matt Senske was the inaugural Gerard Award of Excellence recipient, and in 2009 former cross country and track and field student-athlete Betsy Miller was selected as the honoree. Miller is pursuing a graduate degree in leadership at Nebraska.
