Nebraska Falls To San Diego

San Diego, Calif. - The No. 6 Nebraska Huskers women's tennis team (15-2, 4-0 Big Ten) were defeated 5-2 by San Diego (5-6, 0-0 WCC) on Sunday. The "luck of the Irish" escaped the Huskers as they couldn't scrape together enough victories to pull out the win.

The Huskers started the match on top in doubles play by snatching the point early. At the No. 1 position, Nebraska's No. 7 Mary Weatherholt and Patricia Veresova swept San Diego's Stephanie Hoffpauir and Anna Depenau 8-0 before the Toreros' Cara Brown and Marta Stojanovic toppled the Huskers' Izabella Zgierska and Maggy Lehmicke 8-6 at tthe No. 3 spot to split the matches. The deciding match at the No. 2 position resulted in a 9-7 victory for Nebraska's Stefanie Weinstein and Janine Weinreich to seal the doubles point at 1-0.

The Huskers extended their grasp on the match to 2-0 at the No. 1 singles position where No. 10 Mary Weatherholt defeated San Diego's Stephanie Hoffpauir 6-3, 6-1. Nebraska couldn't retain its grip on the competition and lost the remaining five matches straight to fall to San Diego.

At the No. 3 spot, San Diego's Shani Blecher toppled Nebraska's Stefanie Weinstein 7-5, 6-0 before the Toreros' No. 87 Laura Claus defeated the Huskers' Patricia Veresova6-1, 6-3 at the No. 2 position to make the score 2-2.

The match was decided at 4-2 when San Diego's Cara Brown knocked off Nebraska's Izabella Zgierska 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 6 position quickly followed by the Toreros' Marta Stojanovic besting the Huskers' Maggy Lehmicke 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 4 spot. The final match went to a third set but was only played as a tie breaker with the match decided and San Diego's Anna Depenau narrowly edged Nebraska's Janine Weinreich 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) at the No. 5 spot to bring the final score to 5-2.

Nebraska faces Oklahoma State in San Diego, Calif. on Thursday, March 21 at 5 p.m. before heading to State College, Pa. to face Penn State on Sunday, March 31 at 11 a.m.
