Huskers Add Four Titles at Kansas Relays

Lawrence, Kan. – The Nebraska track and field team closed the 2013 Kansas Relays with four event wins on Saturday. James White started the day for the Huskers with a win in the men’s high jump, while Chad Wright won the men’s discus, Jodi-Rae Blackwood won the men’s 400 meter hurdles and the men’s 4x100 meter relay team of John Welk, Dexter McKenzie, Ricco Hall and Tim Thompson tallied a first-place finish.

White finished first in the men’s high jump competition, posting a leap of 6-11 ½ (2.12). Carlos Hernandez added an eighth-place finish with a jump of 6-9 ½ (2.07), while Travis Englund was ninth with a jump of 6-7 ½ (2.02).

Wright tallied his second title of the weekend, winning the men’s discus with a throw of 198-6 (60.50). With the win, Wright remains undefeated on the season in the event.

Morgan Wilken posted a fifth-place finish in the women’s discus, finishing with a throw of 164-1 (50.01). Annie Jackson finished ninth with a throw of 150-10 (45.98).

Mara Griva tallied a third-place finish and a jump of 19-9 ¾ (6.04) in the women’s long jump. Kara Mostoller finished fifth overall with a personal-best leap of 19-5 ½ (5.93). Kari Heck notched a ninth-place finish as she posted a mark of 18-5 ¾ (5.63).  

Patrick Raedler finished sixth in the men’s long jump, posting a jump of 23-3 ½ (7.10), while Seth Wiedel came in eighth 23-2 (7.06) and Nikita Pankins notched a ninth-place finish with a leap of 23-0 (7.01).

Mara Weekes finished fourth in the women’s 100 meter finals as she recorded a time of 12.14. Tim Thompson also tallied a fourth-place finish on the men’s side with a time of 10.61, matching his season-best time. In the women’s 400 meters, Lexie Oak came in seventh with a time of 58.42.

Blackwood captured the men’s 400 meter hurdles title as he recorded a season-best time of 51.50. The time ranks fifth in the Big Ten and 21st nationally. Tibor Koroknai came in third with a time of 52.66. Ellie Grooters tallied a seventh-place finish in the finals of the women’s 400 meter hurdles. She finished with a time of 1:03.36.   

The men’s 4x100 meter relay team of Welk, McKenzie, Hall and Thompson took home the event title with a winning time of 40.35. The women’s 4x100 meter relay team of Heck, Weekes, Oak and McCarty finished fifth in the finals, recording a season-best time of 46.59.

The men’s 4x400 meter relay team notched a second-place finish with a season-best time of 3:07.95. The time ranks fourth in the Big Ten. The women’s 4x400 meter relay team of Weekes, Oak, Grooters and Minnick finished fifth with a time of 3:48.18.
