Minneapolis,
Minn. - The Nebraska swimming and diving team completed its second full day of
competition at the Big Ten Championships on Friday evening at the University of
Minnesota Aquatic Center. The Huskers had six individual swimmers, four divers,
and the 400-yard medley relay team competing in final rounds during the meet's
fifth session.
The Huskers began the fifth session by setting a
new school record in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Hayley Martin, Ashley
Reiter, Shannon Guy, and Ariel Weech finished in a time of 3:39.36, earning
them seventh place. The previous school record of 3:40.65 was set in 1995 by
Jane Glazebrook, Penny Heyns, Destiny Lauren, and Melanie Dodd.
Nebraska's first individual competitor, Katie
Davis, finished seventh in the C Final of the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:22.68.
Davis finished 23rd overall in the event, 15 places higher than her finish at
last season's Big Ten Championships.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Shannon Guy took fifth
place with a time of 53.30 seconds. This came after setting a new school record
of 53.23 seconds during the morning session. Guy's fifth place finish was the
highest ever for a Husker individual at the Big Ten Championships. Head Coach
Pablo Morales was proud of her accomplishment.
"Shannon stepped up nicely in her first
championship final," Morales said. "With the time she swam, she has a shot at making
the NCAA's. We'll just have to wait and see."
Taryn Collura (55.32) and Bria Deveaux (55.36) competed
in the C Final of the event, finishing 20th and 21st,
respectively.
The final swimming event of the day saw Hayley
Martin finish 11th in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.55 seconds. Martin
set the school record of 53.81 seconds in Friday morning's session.
Senior Ellan Dufour placed 18th in the
event with a career-best time of 55.61 seconds. Dufour is second behind Martin
on the all-time Nebraska list.
In the diving well, Amy Herman finished 14th in the
three-meter diving competition with a score of 292.15. The senior was the lone
Husker to compete in finals for the event. Kailey Harmon, Nicole Schwery, and
Payton Michaud finished 19th, 20th, and 21st,
respectively.

Following the session, Coach Morales commented on his
team's performance and looked ahead to the final day of the Big Ten
Championships.
"It was a good day all in all," Morales said. "We're
definitely in a battle with Iowa and Northwestern for eighth place and we're
going to have an interesting final day. Saturday will be our fourth day and
feel like our fourth quarter. It's been a grueling three days and everybody's
coming in a little bit weary. The team that comes out strong, puts its
weariness aside, and battles will be the one that has the most success."
The Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships will
resume on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. The session will feature the preliminary
rounds of the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, and
