Huskers Cruise Through Day Two In Tulsa
Tulsa, Okla. - The Nebraska men's tennis team saw two Huskers advance to the fourth round of prequalifying play at the ITA All-American Championships Invite on Sunday. Dusty Boyer and Marc Herrmann notched two wins each to proceed to the final round of prequalifying play. If the two emerge victorious Monday, they will continue on to the qualifying draw.
Herrmann toppled Illinois State's Rolando Torrellas 6-1, 7-5 in the second round moving on to the third round to oust Northwestern's Mihir Kumar 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Boyer outpaced Michigan State's John Patrick Mullane 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 then scorched LSU's Harrison Kennedy 7-6 (4), 6-1. Nebraska's Tom Blackwell fell to Virginia's Jordan Daigle 0-6, 1-6.
On Monday, Herrmann is set to face the No. 5 seed Mississippi's Stefan Lindmark while Boyer is slated to challenge Drake's Matt Frost.
The four Huskers make up two duos selected for the qualifying doubles draw. Blackwell and Herrmann team up as one pair while Boyer and fellow Husker Beau Treyz, who was knocked out of singles in the prequalifying first round, make up the other scarlet and cream tandem.
"(It's) good to see Marc (Herrmann) and Dusty (Boyer) still winning singles matches. Both guys fought through a bad patch here or there in their matches today, but mentally fought through it and are showing the coaches some good things. I feel good that these two guys are learning to win matches based on will power rather than just tennis skills. If they can keep doing this then good things will happen for this program based on their leadership. Tom (Blackwell) ran into a buzz saw today. The kid served big, hit big and just put it to him. That's tough to do to Tom! That happens but Tom will get over it and move on with letting it go. (Tom will) be ready the next time he steps on the court. We have our doubles teams in the main draw qualifiers so we are very anxious to see what we can do! Tom and Marc will be a team and Beau (Treyz) and Dusty the other team."
The qualifying matches begin Monday following the conclusion of prequalifying action. The qualifying singles draw has already been released on the ITA website and the qualifying doubles draw will be made availabe early Monday morning. A field of 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams will then compete in the main draw beginning Thursday, Oct. 3.
Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive an automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 7-10, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, NY.
Results from Monday's matches will be posted here on Huskers.com. Go Big Red!
