Lincoln - Former Nebraska women's basketball players Kelsey Griffin and Cory Montgomery are scheduled to make their WNBA debuts this week.
Griffin, a 6-2 power forward from Eagle River, Alaska, is set to make her first WNBA appearance when her Connecticut Sun take on the Atlanta Dream in a preseason contest on Tuesday at 10 a.m. (Central). The first-team All-American and 2010 Big 12 Conference Player of the Year, was the No. 3 overall pick of the Minnesota Lynx in the 2010 WNBA Draft, before being traded minutes later to the Sun.
Griffin, who averaged 20.1 points and 10.4 rebounds per game as a senior for the Huskers while amassing 2,033 points and 1,019 rebounds in her five-year NU career, will become the third former Nebraska player to wear a Sun uniform, joining former teammates Danielle Page (2008) and Kiera Hardy (2007).
After Griffin debuts on Tuesday, Montgomery will take the court for the first time as a WNBA player with the New York Liberty on Wednesday, May 5 at 10:30 a.m. (CT) against the Washington Mystics in a preseason exhibition contest. The 6-2 forward from Cannon Falls, Minn., joined Griffin in earning first-team All-Big 12 honors as a senior for the Huskers in 2010.
Montgomery finished her NU career as one of just eight players with more 1,300 points and more than 600 rebounds. She was the No. 25 overall pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft, as the first pick of the third round by the Liberty.
The Connecticut Sun will play their second preseason game against Poland on Thursday, May 7, before Griffin and Montgomery will have a chance to go head-to-head on Tuesday, May 11, when the Sun travel to New York to face the Liberty in a 9:30 a.m. (CT) preseason finale.
