Jablonski Named Gatorade Player of the Year
Incoming freshman Kaylan Jablonski was named the 2013-14 Gatorade Nebraska High School Softball Player of the Year, the Gatorade Company, in collaboration with USA Today High School Sports, announced on Thursday.
Jablonski is the first Omaha Skutt Catholic player to earn the player-of-the-year honor. She is also the first player from a Class B school to be named the Nebraska Gatorade Player of the Year since current Husker junior Alicia Armstrong, who was named the state's top player in 2011-12 for Beatrice High School. Jablonski's incoming classmate Madi Unzicker was named the 2012-13 Nebraska Gatorade Player of the Year as a junior at Millard South High School.
Jablonski led Omaha Skutt to a 28-4 record and the 2013 Class B state championship. In the circle, Jablonski compiled a 23-2 record with a 0.81 ERA, striking out 278 batters and walking just 22 in 155.2 innings. She was just as good at the plate, posting a .610 batting average with nine home runs and 33 RBIs. For her efforts, Jablonski was also named the honorary captain of the Omaha World-Herald All-Nebraska team.
In her career, Jablonski posted an 81-14 record with a 1.50 ERA and 891 strikeouts in 556.0 innings. She boasted a .557 career batting average, an all-class state record. Jablonski also set Nebraska Class B career records with 25 home runs and 137 RBIs.
Jablonski is one of six incoming freshmen who will join the Husker softball program this fall. In addition to Jablonski and Unzicker, fellow in-state products Gina Metzler (Papillion-La Vista HS) and Taylor Otte (Wahoo HS) will all begin their Husker careers this season. The four in-state products will be joined by out-of-state stars Laura Barrow (Kearney, Mo.) and Caitlin Bartsch (The Woodlands, Texas).
