2014 Outlook
Sam Burtch was a breakout player for the Nebraska offense in 2013, serving as part of the regular rotation at receiver throughout the season. Burtch’s role grew as the year progressed, and he heads into his junior season expecting to play a large role in the 2014 Husker offense.

The 6-3, 195-pound Burtch brings a big target to a receiving corps that returns seven of its top eight players for this season. A walk-on performer, Burtch is also a standout off the field twice earning Academic All-Big Ten honors and serving as president of Nebraska’s Uplifting Athletes chapter.

2013 (Sophomore)
Burtch played in all 13 games and made starts against Michigan State and Penn State. He finished with 12 receptions for 147 yards and three touchdowns. He was at his best late in the season, making 10 of his 12 catches in the final six games.

Burtch’s first two catches resulted in touchdowns, a 26-yarder from Taylor Martinez against Southern Miss and a 16-yard catch from Ron Kellogg vs. South Dakota State. Burtch caught three passes for 20 yards against Northwestern, including two on the final drive to help set up NU’s Hail Mary. He caught five passes for 86 yards, including a career-long 32-yard touchdown, against Michigan State. Burtch added two catches at Penn State.

2012 (Redshirt Freshman)
Burtch played in four games as a reserve receiver, appearing in Nebraska’s wins over Southern Miss, Arkansas State, Idaho State and Minnesota. He did not have a reception.

2011 (Redshirt)
Burch redshirted in his first year and worked as a scout team receiver.

Before Nebraska (Elmwood-Murdoch HS)
Burtch joined the Husker program as a receiver from Elmwood-Murdock High School, where he starred at receiver for Coach Leigh Schmale. Burtch earned first-team Class C-2 all-state honors from both the Lincoln Journal Star and the Omaha World-Herald in 2010. Burtch caught 44 passes for 1,038 yards and eight touchdowns to help his team to a 9-2 record and a trip to the Class C-2 quarterfinals.

The 2010 season marked the fourth straight year the school reached at least the quarterfinals of the state playoffs. Burtch also caught eight touchdown passes as part of his 26 receptions as a junior. At the 2011 Shrine Bowl, Burtch caught four passes for a total of 76 yards, including two touchdown receptions of 12 and 40 yards. Both touchdown passes were thrown by fellow redshirt freshman Tyson Broekemeier.

On the track, Burtch won 11 total medals in three seasons with the track team. He won the Class C 800 meters at the 2010 and 2011 Nebraska state track meets and was a three-time silver medalist in the 400 meters. Burtch also posted first-, second- and third-place finishes as a member of Elmwood-Murdock's 1,600- and 3,200-meter relay teams. Burtch also added to his medal total in the 200 meters.

Burtch received recruiting interest from Northwest Missouri State before selecting NU.
