Huskers Seniors Make Third Round in Tulsa
Tulsa, Okla. - Three Huskers seniors advance to the top 16 of the tournament looking to face heated competition in the third round at the ITA/USTA Women's Central Region Tennis Championships.
After the first two rounds of play in both doubles and singles, the Huskers ended day two of the event with mixed results.
In the singles main draw the Huskers seniors performed well. Senior Patricia Veresova swept past Missouri's Maria Christensen 6-2, 6-2 while senior Janine Weinreich rolled over Drake's Nell Boyd in three sets scored at 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. Senior Stefanie Weinstein defeated Missouri's Rachel Stuhlmann 6-7 (7), 6-0, 6-1 as junior Maike Zeppernick fell to Kansas' Maria Cardona 6-3, 6-7 (7), 2-6. Sophomore Izabella Zgierska was ousted by Kanas' Belen Luduena 1-6, 0-6 while freshman Maggy Lehmicke lost to Oklahoma State's Meghan Blevins 6-3, 6-7 (7), 2-6.
The three seniors built on their first round success going into the second round. Veresova defeated Southern Illinois' Melanie Delsart 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 while Weinreich shut down Wichita State's Rebecca Pedrazzi in a 6-3, 6-2 victory. Weinstein rallied on first round momentum as well ousting Drake's Jordan Eggleson 6-3, 6-2.
Third Round matches begin at 1 p.m. Saturday. Veresova faces Oklahoma's Hermon Brhane as Weinreich goes up against Arkansas' Yang Pang. Weinstein heads against Oklahoma State's C.C. Sardinha.
Dropping from the main draw, Zgierska and Zeppernick saw more singles action in the consolation bracket. Zeppernick concluded her singles matches when she fell to Minnesota's Natallia Pintusava 1-6, 3-6. Izabella Zgierska advanced to the second round of the consolation bracket with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over South Dakota State's Jenny Blackburne.
Zgierska will play her second round consolation match against Wichita State's Carla Venticinque at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Moving on to doubles play, the Huskers were unable to have any duos advance to the third round. In the first round, Lehmicke/Zgierska defeated South Dakota State's Jenny Blackburne and Florencia Magni 8-4 while Zeppernick/Wagner fell to Southern Illinois' Natasha Tomishima and Jennifer Dien 3-8.
The second round saw the Huskers end of doubles play in the tournament. Going into the second round on a bye, No. 4 seeded Weinstein/Weinreich lost to Drake's Jordan Eggleson and Klavdija Rebol 4-8 while Lehmicke/Zgierska fell to Iowa's Katie Zordani and Ruth Seaborne 4-8. Also beginning the second round off a bye, No. 6 seeded Weatherholt, Veresova was defeated by Kansas State's Petra Niedermayerova and Ivana Kubickova 5-8. There is no consolation doubles bracket.
