Huskers' Home Winning Streak Snapped

Lincoln - The Nebraska softball team's nation-leading 16-game home winning streak came to an end in game one of Friday's doubleheader at Bowlin Stadium, as Wisconsin produced more clutch hits in a 3-1 win over the Huskers.

The loss was Nebraska's fifth straight, as the Huskers fell to 31-22 on the season and dropped to 12-9 in Big Ten play. NU also lost for the first time at home this season, dropping to 13-1 at Bowlin Stadium. The 16-game home winning streak that was snapped was tied for the nation's longest active streak and was a Bowlin Stadium record.

With the win, Wisconsin improved to 34-17 and improved to 13-8 in league play. Cassandra Darrah (22-11) earned the complete-game victory for the Badgers, scattering six hits while allowing only one run. She held Nebraska to just 2-for-11 hitting with runners on base and only 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, as the Huskers stranded seven runners.

While Nebraska struggled to deliver clutch hits in numerous opportunities, Wisconsin had only four at bats with runners in scoring position in the game. The Badgers came through with two hits in those situations, including a two-out, two-run bloop single from Shannel Blackshear that landed just fair down the right field line to give UW a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning.

The Huskers then loaded the bases with none out in the bottom of the frame on a bunt single from senior Nikki Haget, another single from junior Gabby Banda and a hit batter by sophomore Taylor Edwards. Senior Ashley Guile then delivered an RBI single up the middle to cut the lead to 2-1. With the bases loaded and still none out, a strikeout and a pair of pop ups prevented the Huskers from pulling even.

Nebraska again stranded the tying runner at third in the bottom of the sixth before a pinch-hit solo home run from Karla Powell stretched the lead to 3-1 in the top of the seventh.

In its final at bat, NU was retired in order for the third time in the final four innings.

Senior right-hander Ashley Hagemann (22-17) took the loss and suffered her fourth straight defeat. Hagemann tossed a seven-hitter and allowed three runs. She walked four and struck out four.

Offensively, Haget was 2-for-3 while Guile drove in Nebraska's lone run.

Nebraska and Wisconsin wrap up their doubleheader with game two.
