Huskers Battle, Overcome Badgers in Five Sets

Lincoln, Neb. – The No. 10 Nebraska volleyball team (11-2, 4-0) took down the No. 23 Wisconsin Badgers 3-2 (25-23, 26-24, 22-25, 30-32, 15-6) in front of 8,277 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on Saturday night. With the victory, the Huskers remain undefeated in Big Ten play.

Kelsey Robinson produced a dominating performance to lead the Huskers, recording a career-high 29 kills on 56 swings for a .393 hitting clip. She also recorded a team-high 22 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. Meghan Haggerty notched a season-high 13 kills on 23 swings for a hitting percentage of .391. Amber Rolfzen guided the Huskers at the net with eight blocks, including seven block assists. Mary Pollmiller dished out 54 assists on the night.  

Nebraska hit .236 in the match, while Wisconsin hit at a clip of. 195. The Huskers boasted a season-high 17.5 team blocks, while the Badgers had 13. NU out-dug Wisconsin 84-76.

The Huskers had trouble finding a rhythm early in the first set, as a pair of runs put Wisconsin up 16-9. Nebraska made a push with back-to-back kills from Haggerty and Robinson to pull within 19-15, while Kadie Rolfzen and Cecilia Hall propelled the Huskers to tie the set at 21-21. Nebraska completed the comeback effort with a 25-23 first-set win over the Badgers.

Robinson posted five kills in the first set, while Kadie Rolfzen and Haggerty both had three. Nebraska hit just .189 in the set, but the Badgers were held to a .149 hitting clip. The Huskers out-blocked Wisconsin 6.5-1.

Nebraska started the second set with a kill from Robinson and ace from Brenna Lyles, pushing Nebraska to a 4-2 lead. Alexa Ethridge spurred the Huskers from the service line, using an ace to put NU up 15-11. The Badgers cut into the Nebraska lead at 19-17 and forced the Huskers to use a timeout. With the set tied at 22-22, the Huskers completed yet another comeback to win the second set 26-24.

Leading the way in the second set was Robinson with seven kills, while Pollmiller, Haggerty and Amber Rolfzen all had three kills. The Huskers hit .295 in the set, while Wisconsin hit .324.

Both teams fell victim to sloppy serving in the third set, but Robinson gave Nebraska the lead at 9-8. A kill from Robinson made it 19-16, NU, and forced Wisconsin to use a timeout. The Badgers came back to tie the set and take a 23-20 lead. The Huskers held off two set points from UW, but Wisconsin held on for the 25-22 third-set win and force a fourth set.

Robinson tallied six kills in the set, while Pollmiller handed out 13 assists. Nebraska hit .237 as a team, with Wisconsin hitting at a clip of .256. Both teams had two team blocks.

An ace from Robinson tied the fourth set at 5-5, but the Badgers posted four consecutive points to go up 9-5. A laser shot from Hall, put NU within 12-9, and Pollmiller notched a solo block to tie the set at 13-13. A solo block from Amber Rolfzen put NU up 20-19, and the two teams battled back and forth until the Badgers won the fourth set 32-30.

Robinson had eight kills in the fourth set, while Meghan Haggerty recorded two. Pollmiller handed out 17 assists, while Nebraska hit .160 as a team. Wisconsin hit .267 for the set and had seven team blocks, to Nebraska’s three.

The Huskers pulled away in the fifth set, using back-to-back errors from the Badgers to take a 7-3 lead. Nebraska didn’t look back as an 8-3 run helped the Huskers win the fifth set 15-6.

Robinson led the way in the fifth with three kills, while Kadie Rolfzen had two. Nebraska was errorless in the set and hit .462. Wisconsin hit -.120 in the set and did not record a team block.

Nebraska hits the road next weekend as the Huskers travel to Michigan and Michigan State for a pair of conference showdowns.
