Murray, Ky. - The eighth-ranked Nebraska rifle team fired their second-highest score of the season at their NCAA Qualifier match on Sunday afternoon. NU posted a 4,650 to finish second behind Jacksonville State (4,664) and unofficially claim a spot in the NCAA Championship field for the first time since 2010. The match marked one of the Huskers' most complete performances this season, as the team earned its third-highest smallbore total (2,306) and fourth-highest air rifle aggregate (2,344) of 2012-13.
"I am so proud of this team and their efforts throughout the year," Head Coach Stacy Underwood said. "We worked hard to place ourselves in the top eight headed into nationals. Our focus as a team was to do what we had done all year, to remember that we love to compete and to compete for this program."
NU picked up a score of 2,306 on the smallbore range to start the competition on a strong note. The Huskers were led in the event identical efforts of 579 from Janine Dutton, Denise Martin and Magdalena Mical. Mical's performance was a career-best for the freshman, while Marissa Major also added a career-best at 568.
The Huskers moved to air rifle, posting a solid team mark of 2,344. Katelyn Woltersdorf and fellow senior Dutton finished in the second and fourth-place spots, respectively, for their efforts of 588 apiece. Major's career day also continued as the freshman contributed a 583 on the air rifle range.
Nebraska entered the weekend ranked eighth nationally with a top-three score average of 4,648.67. After firing the seventh-highest NCAA Qualifier score in the nation this weekend, NU has unofficially qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2010. The NCAA Rifle Championship field takes the top eight competitors nationally based on each team's top-three score average combined with their performance at the NCAA Qualifiers. The NCAA Championship field will not be officially unveiled until Wednesday, Feb. 20.
NU will travel to the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships next weekend in Oxford, Miss. The match will be held on Feb. 22-23 with competition between West Virginia, Kentucky, Army, Ole Miss, Memphis, Nebraska and NC State.
