Gollott, Castro Show Individual Confidence

Iowa City, Iowa. - The No. 11 Nebraska men's gymnastics team continued on to the second stop on their five-meet road campaign. The Huskers met for a triangular against conference foes No. 6 Minnesota and No. 10 Iowa at Carver Hawkeye Arena at noon CST on Saturday. NU earned a team score of 418.150, finishing in third behind the Golden Gophers (437.400) and the Hawkeyes (433.050).

The Huskers started on still rings, their strongest and most consistent event so far this season. Junior Grant Perdue kicked off the triangular, earning a 13.25 for his routine. Senior Zach Hedval followed with a strong 14.30. Robbie Kocks took home the highest score on the event for NU (14.85). Senior C.J. Schaaf was injured during his routine, taking him not only out of the event, but out of the entire meet.

NU then moved to floor exercise, hoping to put up strong scores despite losing Schaaf. Freshman Travis Gollott  finished just below his personal best, which he set last weekend in Michigan. He grabbed a 14.55 for his routine. Junior Josh Ungar and redshirt freshman Austin Epperson tied scores, both earning a 14.00. This was a season best for Ungar on floor. Former All-American on floor Grant Perdue led the Huskers on the event, earning a 15.00 for his performance.

Nebraska then moved to pommel horse to finish up the first half of the meet. Castro started the event strong, earning a 14.05, a new personal best for the freshman. Ethan Lottman also put down a strong performance, grabbing a 14.30. Senior Eric Schryver led NU with a 14.55 on the event.

The Huskers then moved to high bar to kick off the second half of the conference triangular. Epperson led Nebraska with a solid routine, earning a 14.10. Schryver came in behind him with a 14.00, followed by Ungar with a 13.75 and Castro with a 13.55.

NU struggled on vault, seeing a team score of 70.200 on the event. Gollott led the team with a 14.55, a new personal best for the freshman. Senior Wyatt Aycock earned the Huskers' second best score, grabing a 14.30. Perdue, Ungar, junior Louis Klein and Castro all finished with scores in the 13s, unable to break above 13.90.

The Huskers looked to finish the meet strong on their final rotation, parallel bars. Gollott started the event for the Huskers, making his collegiate debut on parallel bars. After a strong performance, he earned a 13.75. Epperson followed Gollott, matching his score of 13.75. Returning All-American Sam Chamberlain led the Huskers on the event, earning a 14.75 for his technical routine. Aycock finished out the meet for Nebraska, earning a 14.30, his season best score on the event.

Nebraska finished out the meet with a total team score of 418.150. Junior Robbie Kocks continued to show strength on the still rings, tying for the individual event title with Minnesota's Steve Jaciuk. Sam Chamberlain also placed within the top three on an individual event, tying for third on parallel bars with Minnesota's Ellis Mannon.

Select members of the Husker lineup will have the opportunity to compete at the Winter Cup in Las Vegas on Feb. 20-22. The rest of the Nebraska team will get a week off before flying to Columbus, Ohio, to face No. 4 Ohio State, No. 3 Stanford, No. 6 Minnesota and No. 10 Iowa at the Arnold Challenge. The meet will be held St. John Arena at 2 p.m. CST. NU will then continue on to Norman, Okla., where they will face the No. 1 Oklahoma Sooners on March 9.
