The Nebraska bowling program was well represented at the USBC
Team USA Trials over this past weekend in Las Vegas. Former Huskers Diandra
Asbaty and Shannon Pluhowsky each
earned a spot on Team USA, while current Husker Elise Bolton made
the Junior Team USA squad.
Asbaty (formerly Hymanthe), the 2000 National Bowler of the Year, placed second overall in the field of 85
bowlers. Asbaty recorded a total pinfall of 6,587 through five rounds of competition. Asbaty earned her 15th appearance on Team USA.
Pluhowsky, another former
Husker great, will be making her 13th appearance as a Team USA member after she
finished 12th at the
trials with a total pinfall of 6,344. Even though Pluhowsky did not finish in the
top three of competition, three other wild card spots are filled through a
voting process, and
Pluhowsky was one of the three bowlers selected for those spots.
Bolton finished tied for
fourth in the overall competition and was second in the junior division with a total
pinfall of 6,246. A multiple gold medal winner for Junior Team USA,
Bolton will continue to compete for Nebraska this
season.
Senior Kristi Mickelson also
competed over the weekend, placing 59th in competition. Mickelson tallied a total
pinfall of 5,645.
