Topeka, Kan. - The Nebraska swimmers finished
competition in the Kansas Classic at the Capital Federal Natatorium on Sunday.
The Huskers finished in third place with a team score of 674 on the weekend.
Notre Dame (976.5) and Kansas (853.5) placed first and second, respectively.
The
Huskers got off to a great start on Sunday, with Bailey Pons winning the
1,650-yard freestyle in a meet record time of 16:48.88. Katt Sickle (17:16.92)
and Morgan Flannigan (17:23.56) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Ashleigh
Grammar finished in 14th with a time of 18:14.60.
Ariel
Weech was the other Husker winner on the day, as she was victorious in the
100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.31 seconds. Additionally, Hayley Martin had
a big day for the Huskers, placing fourth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.81),
seventh in the 100-yard freestyle (52.65), and earning a second place finish as
a part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team.
Ashley
Reiter finished fifth in the 200-yard breastroke, while Kristin Strecker finished
in eighth. Natalie Morris placed fourth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time
of 2:06.42.
Other
top-16 Husker finishers were Ellan Dufour (200 Back), Ashley Reiter (100
Breast), Kelsey Larson (200 Breast), Melisa Mexia (200 Butterfly), and Kelly
Dunn (100 Free).
Overall,
Nebraska won four of the eighteen events on the weekend, with Bailey Pons
winning both the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyles to lead the way.
The
squad will return to action with the Hawkeye Invitational beginning Nov. 30 in Iowa City, Iowa. The Huskers will then have a break until Holiday Training in January. Their next dual isn't until January
19, when they host San Diego State at the Devaney Natatorium.
