Huskers Take Down Wildcats

Lincoln, Neb. - The No. 34 Nebraska women's tennis team extended their winning streak to nine matches with a 4-3 win over the Kansas State Wildcats on Wednesday afternoon at the Nebraska Tennis Centers. The Huskers (10-1) swept doubles play against the Wildcats (4-6) before adding wins at the No. 3, 4 and 5 singles positions.

NU used a fast start to leap ahead of the Wildcats, beginning with a win in No. 1 doubles courtesy of Mary Weatherholt and Patricia Veresova (NU). The duo downed Petra Niedermayerova and Karla Bonacic (KSU) 8-3. Janine Weinreich and Stefanie Weinstein (NU) followed suit, defeating Marketa Trousilova and Carli Wischoff (KSU) 8-5 at the No. 2 position to capture the doubles point.

Jennifer Holmberg and Maike Zeppernick (NU) wrapped up Nebraska's sweep of doubles play on the No. 3 court, edging Ana Gomez Aleman and Amina St. Hill (KSU), 8-7.

Nebraska and K-State moved to singles play, where KSU picked up their first win of the day at the No. 1 singles position in a matchup of ranked players. No. 24 Petra Niedermayerova defeated No. 55 Mary Weatherholt 6-3, 6-1.

The Huskers fought back as Stefanie Weinstein captured NU's second point of the match with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 victory over Kansas State's Ana Gomez Alemanr at the No. 3 position. No. 106 ranked Janine Weinreich pushed Nebraska's lead to 3-1 with a solid 6-4, 6-2 victory over Marketa Trousilova in No. 4 singles.

Freshman Izabella Zgierska (NU) clinched the win for the Huskers, battling past Carli Wischoff to wrap up a 6-3, 7-5 win in No. 5 singles. The Wildcats continued to claw back in the final two matches, picking up wins in No. 2 and No. 6 singles to put the final tally at 4-3 in favor of the Huskers.

Nebraska will be back in action this weekend at the Nebraska Tennis Center, hosing the Saint Louis Billikens and the Colorado Buffaloes. NU will face the Billikens on Friday at 7 p.m. before battling the Buffaloes on Sunday at noon.
