Huskers Upset No. 4 Alaska in Lincoln
"One of the things we have focused on this year is working on the little things to make ourselves better competitors," Underwood said. "Today, we embodied the true persona of a competitor: instead of hoping and wishing for good things, we were confident in the work we have done during practice. This helped us to regroup and come back with determination when we hit a few obstacles."
The Huskers kicked off the day on the smallbore range, where NU was once again paced by senior Katelyn Woltersdorf. Woltersdorf fired her way to a 580 on the day, good for second overall in the competition. Denise Martin added a 575 to finish sixth overall, while Janine Dutton was third for the Huskers with a 573.
Alaska-Fairbanks was led in smallbore competition by Soren Butler, whose mark of 581 took home the event title. Following smallbore competition, the Huskers narrowly trailed the Nanooks by a score of 2,302-2,297.
Nebraska responded in a big way on the air rifle range, taking the top three spots in the event to strike back at Alaska-Fairbanks. Martin came up big again for Nebraska, capturing the event title with a 588. Sunny Russell and Dutton added identical scores of 587 to come in at second and third place, respectively.
The Huskers' team score in air rifle came in at 2,344, edging the Nanooks' mark of 2,339 and putting the match at a 4,641-4,641 tie. The center shot tiebreaker was used to determine the winner, and the Huskers emerged victorious on the afternoon.
"While we were rewarded with a great team score today, the true reward was seeing the fight in each of the girls to earn every single point and to not give up," Underwood said. "Today was an excellent example of the team that we strive to be."
The Huskers will be back in action again next weekend, as the team welcomes the No. 2 Kentucky Wildcats to the NU Rifle Range. The match is slated for an 8 a.m. start on Oct. 13, with free live stats available on Huskers.com.
