Field Set for Charleston Classic

Lincoln -- ESPN Regional Television (ERT), a subsidiary of ESPN, announced today that Davidson and Massachusetts will complete the eight-team field for the 2013 Charleston Classic set for Nov. 21-24 at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C.

The other six teams, previously announced, were Clemson, Georgia, New Mexico, Nebraska, Temple and UAB. Both Davidson and UMass reached postseason play in 2012-13. Davidson went 26-8 and lost to Elite Eight participant Marquette in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, while UMass went 21-12 and reached the NIT.

In all, four of the eight Charleston Classic teams won at least 20 games last year, led by Mountain West regular season and tournament champion New Mexico, which went 29-6 and was a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Temple, which went 24-10, reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Big Ten regular-season champion Indiana.

The Charleston Classic is the first of three ESPN-sponsored events for Nebraska in the coming years. During the 2014-15 season, the Huskers will compete in the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu and the Anaheim Classic in 2015-16.

The 2013 Charleston Classic, a men’s college basketball tournament, will feature a bracket format with 12 games over three days. Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through the bracket. The two teams that remain undefeated throughout will face off in a championship game on the final day of competition.

Past winners of the Charleston Classic are Colorado, Northwestern, Georgetown, Miami (Fla.) and Clemson. In the 2013 NCAA Tournament, both Georgetown and Miami (Fla.) secured No. 2 seeds with Miami (Fla.) advancing to the Elite Eight.

This family-friendly tournament offers the teams a week of practice, play and experiences in and around historic Charleston.
