Fayetteville, Ark. – The Nebraska track and field team opened competition at the 2014 NCAA West Regional Preliminary Rounds at John McDonnell Field on the campus of the University of Arkansas on Thursday. Over the three-day meet the Huskers will compete to earn a top-12 finish and move on to compete at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., in two weeks.
Maggie Malone started the day for the Huskers as she punched her ticket to the NCAA Championship Finals in Eugene, Ore., for the second consecutive year with a fourth-place finish in the women’s javelin. Malone tallied a throw of 169-1 (51.54) on her fifth attempt of the competition to secure her spot in the finals.
The Huskers went three-for-three in the women’s long jump as Tierra Williams, Mollie Gribbin and Jazmin McCoy all qualified for the NCAA Finals. Williams finished sixth in the competition with a leap of 20-5 ¾ (6.24), while Mollie Gribbin came in eighth with a wind-aided personal-best jump of 20-3 ¾ (6.19). Jazmin McCoy rounded out the field at 12th with a mark of 19-11 ¾ (6.09). All three will be making their first trip to the NCAA Championships. Gribbin will also look to qualify in the women’s triple jump tomorrow. Patrick Raedler will be making his first appearance at an NCAA Outdoor Championships as he qualified on Thursday with an eighth-place finish in the men’s long jump on a jump of 25-0 (7.62).
Chad Wright also earned a spot in the finals in Eugene as he tallied a throw of 60-1 (18.31) on his fifth attempt of the competition. He’ll look to capture another spot in the finals in the men’s discus on Saturday. Annie Jackson and Carlie Pinkelman added their names to the list of Huskers competing at the NCAA Championships, advancing in the women’s shot put. Jackson finished fifth, launching a throw of 54-10 ¾ (16.73), while Pinkelman came in ninth with a personal-best throw of 53-2 ¾ (16.22). Both will be making their first appearances at an NCAA Championships in two weeks.
Also in preliminary action on Thursday, the Huskers advanced four of six to the quarterfinals in the men’s 400-meter hurdles as Mate Koroknai (50.42) was third, Tibor Koroknai finished fifth (50.63), Miles Ukaoma was 12th (51.10) and Jodi-Rae Blackwood came in 17th (51.42). On the women’s side, Ellie Grooters advanced to the quarterfinals with a time of 58.53 for 13th. Tim Thompson automatically qualified for the quarterfinals in the men’s 100 meters with a third-place finish and a time of 10.49 in the third heat of the preliminaries. Levi Gipson finished third in his heat of the 400m with a time of 46.41 to automatically qualify for the quarterfinals, while Cody Rush joined Gipson with a second-place finish and a time of 46.57.
