Huskers Return to Practice after Spring Break
LINCOLN - With students back in class at Nebraska, the Huskers picked up where the left off on Monday with their fourth spring practice. The Huskers were in full pads and split the two-hour practice between the Hawks Championship Center and the outdoor practice fields.
After practice Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini spoke to the media about today's practice. Pelini said that the team looked good and that their first day back was a productive afternoon.
"I thought we had a good day coming back," Pelini said. "You always worry about it with a little bit of a lay off and what's going to happen. We had a good practice; good tempo. I thought the recall of the things we've installed was pretty good. I thought it was a good practice for being off for eight, nine, 10 days."
The University was on spring break last week, but that didn't mean that Pelini was going to have a light practice as the players returned from a week off.
"No," Pelini said when asked about if took it easier on the team today. "We got after it today. Our guys are in really good shape. It's pretty obvious to me that our guys did what we asked them to do during the week off. The tempo was really good. We didn't look sluggish. We got out of there with no injuries."
One key aspect of the game the Huskers are working on this offseason has been paying attention to detail. Pelini was asked what specific details the team was working on.
"It's about every single rep that the guys in there. It's about executing and doing your job. We talk about football being the ultimate team game and every guy has to do their job," Pelini said. "Unless you have attention to detail, you're not going to do your job to your extent because things happen fast and things are changing. It's about understanding what's expected to you and busting your butt to get it done every single play. I think our guys are doing a pretty good job of doing it. We're not where we want to be yet, but I think we're heading in that direction."
The Huskers made a couple of coaching changes this offseason on the defensive side of the ball and Pelini spoke about how it's like they've always been working together.
"It's like we've been together for a long time. We have JP [John Papuchis], Ross [Els] and I have been together now for a couple years. Kaz [Rick Kaczenski] knows what's expected having gone through the spring and Terry Joseph has been around me before. It's a good group. I like our staff. I like our continuity. It's like we've been together for a long time. That's the advantage of hiring people you've been around and people who understand what the expectations are."
The Huskers will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon as they continue with their spring practice.
