Sheils Stays in Top 25 at NCAA Regional

Columbus, Ohio - Nebraska's Madeleine Sheils struggled to a second-round 80 but remained in the top 25 after two rounds at the NCAA Women's Golf Midwest Regional on Friday at Ohio State's Scarlet Course.

Sheils, who opened the day in a tie for fourth place after firing an even-par 72 in Thursday's opening round, stumbled for a 41 on her first nine holes on Friday, before managing a 39 over her final nine holes on the 6,264-yard layout of the Scarlet Course.

The senior from Boise, Idaho, started on No. 10 at 12:15 (Central) on Friday afternoon. After a par on the 10th, she took a double-bogey on No. 11. Bogeys on 13, 15 and 18,and another bogey on No. 1 after the turn put her at six-over-par through her first 10 holes. She recovered for three straight pars, but then suffered three consecutive bogeys on No. 5, 6 and 7. She closed the round with a par on Hole No. 8 and her lone birdie of the day on No. 9.

Sheils closed the second round in a 12-way tie for 21st in the 126-player field at the NCAA Central Regional. She heads into Saturday's final round just four strokes out of the top 10.

USC's Lisa McCloskey took a two-stroke lead in the individual standings after her four-under-par 68 on Friday. She heads into the final round at three-under-par 141. She owns a two-shot lead of Vanderbilt's Marina Alex and Lauren Stratton and Florida State's Maria Salinas. USC also owns the top spot in the team standings in the 24-team field.

Sheils tees off for her final round on Saturday at 7:55 a.m. (Central) from Hole No. 1. Live scoring for the tournament is available from GolfStat.com.
