IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Nebraska men’s tennis team won their second-straight Big Ten match on Wednesday afternoon as they defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes by a score of 6-1. With the win, the No. 68th-ranked Huskers improve to 9-9 and 2-3 in conference play. The Hawkeyes are now 1-15 and 0-5 in Big Ten play.

The Huskers started the match off on the right foot by winning the doubles point.

NU’s No. 19th-ranked doubles squad of Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim downed Iowa’s squad of Garret Dunn and Michael Swank, 8-5, on court No. 1. Nebraska was also victorious on court No. 3 when its duo of Stefan Gollner and Eric Sock downed Iowa’s Tom Mroziewicz and Jonas Dierckx, 8-6.

Nebraska kept the momentum it gained in doubles and brought it to singles play where they won five of the six singles matches while sweeping in the top half of the lineup.

On court No. 1, NU’s Aumueller defeated Iowa’s Matt Hagan in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. Nebraska’s Lindheim was victorious on court No. 2 as he defeated Iowa’s Will Vasos, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-2). At the No. 3 spot in the Huskers’ lineup was Robert Schulze who downed Iowa’s Dunn, 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-8).

The Hawkeyes lone point came on court No. 4 when Iowa’s Dierckx defeated NU’s Andre Stenger, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The Huskers got back on the winning track at the No. 5 and 6 spots in their lineup. Playing on court No. 5 was NU’s Gollner who downed Iowa’s Mroziewicz, 6-2, 6-1. On court No. 6, Nebraska’s Tom Blackwell downed Iowa’s Joey White in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

After the match, Nebraska’s head coach, Kerry McDermott was happy with the way his team competed.

“I thought we played really good doubles today. It’s always good to get momentum going into singles play,” McDermott said. “I thought we played a good, complete match. We just kind of went through the entire lineup and I felt our guys picked it up when they needed to. It was good win for us, and we’re ready to move on and take on Purdue on Friday.”

The Huskers will be back in action on Friday, April 6 as they return home to take on No. 72 Purdue. The match will take place at the NU Varsity Courts and will begin at 3 p.m.
