Bummer Tabbed as Starter in Cape Cod All-Star Game
Lincoln - Nebraska pitcher Aaron Bummer has been named the starting pitcher for the East squad in the 2013 Friendly’s Cape Cod League All-Star Game. Bummer will see a familiar face on the mound for the West squad, as Ohio State’s Jaron Long was named the opposing starter. A total of four Big Ten players earned all-star nods, as Michigan’s Trent Szkuntnik and Northwestern’s Brandon Magallones were named reserve.
The 10-team league attracts some of the top collegiate talent in the country and it is set to showcase its all-star game on Saturday, July 27 at Red Wilson Field in Yarmouth, Mass. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. (CT) and it will be televised nationally on Fox College Sports.
Pitching in one of the premier summer leagues in the country, Bummer has been tough on opposing hitters with a 1.39 ERA in 38.2 innings of work over six starts. The 6-2 lefty is 4-2 on the year and has gone at least 6.0 innings in every start this season, including two 7.0-inning outings. The Peoria, Ariz., native didn’t allow a run until the third game of the season, throwing 15.0 consecutive-scoreless innings to start the summer.
Bummer moved into the weekend rotation during the second half of the 2013 season, where he made the most of his opportunity. He went 5.0 or more innings in six of his seven starts at the end of the season, including 7.0 innings in each of his final three starts. Bummer ended the year with a 2.50 ERA, giving up three earned runs just once.
