Iowa City, Iowa - The Nebraska softball team scored six runs over the fourth and fifth innings and held off a late Iowa rally to capture a 7-4 victory in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader at Bob Pearl Field.

The win was Nebraska's sixth straight and its 17th in the last 19 games. With the win, the Huskers improved to 26-14 on the season and remained in second place in the Big Ten Conference standings with an 8-2 record in league play.

Senior right-hander Ashley Hagemann earned the win in relief to win her fifth straight decision and improve to 18-11 on the year. Hagemann worked the final 4.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned), on five hits, while striking out eight and walking four. Sophomore right-hander Tatum Edwards earned the start and allowed one run on two hits in 3.0 innings.

Offensively, senior Nikki Haget went 2-for-4 with a season-high two RBIs. Tatum Edwards also had two hits for the Huskers.

Chelsea Lyon (8-12) took the loss for Iowa, which fell to 15-21 overall and 5-5 in conference play.

The Huskers out-hit the Hawkeyes, 9-7. Nebraska trailed 1-0 after three innings of play before taking a 6-1 lead after five innings of play. The Hawkeyes made it a game late, scoring twice in the sixth and once in the seventh, while bringing the tying run to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

After Nebraska got its leadoff runner on but failed to score in each of the first three innings, Iowa made the most of its first scoring chance in the bottom of the third. Johnnie Dowling slapped a one-out single to right field and scored on a two-out, RBI double from Megan Blank.

Nebraska answered in its next at bat. Sophomore Taylor Edwards walked and senior Ashley Guile and Tatum Edwards followed with singles to load the bases with none out. Junior Brooke Thomason then worked a walk to scored Taylor Edwards and tie the game at 1-1. After the next two hitters were retired, senior Madison Drake drew a four-pitch walk to force in another run and give Nebraska the lead. Haget then capped the four-run inning by lining the first pitch she saw into center field for a two-run single that gave the Huskers a 4-1 lead.

Hagemann came on for the bottom of the fourth and struck out the side, working around a pair of singles and a walk.

The Huskers added to their lead in the fifth. Taylor Edwards led off with a single off the wall in left. Guile then reached on an error that put runners on first and third. Taylor Edwards came home on an RBI single from her twin sister Tatum to give Nebraska a 5-1 lead. Freshman Mattie Fowler then put down a squeeze bunt that scored freshman pinch runner Jordan Bettiol to make it 6-1. The Huskers still had the bases loaded with only one out before reliever Kayla Massey retired the next two hitters to prevent further damage.

The Hawkeyes got back into the game with a two-run sixth inning. A leadoff walk and a one-out single put runners at first and second before an RBI bunt single and a throwing error cut the lead to 6-3.

Nebraska got a run back in the top of the seventh. Junior Brooke Thomason reached on a leadoff single and she scored on a one-out, RBI single from classmate Courtney Breault.

Leading 7-3, the first two batters reached against Hagemann in the bottom of the seventh. She bounced back and retired the next two hitters before a wild pitch on ball four to Brianna Luna allowed a run to score and brought the tying run up to the plate. Hagemann then struck out Melanie Gladden looking to end the game.

Nebraska and Iowa conclude play on Saturday with game two of the doubleheader.
