Madison, Wis. - The Nebraska track and field team completed action at the 2012 Big Ten Outdoor Championships on Sunday at the McClimon Complex on the campus of the University of Wisconsin. The Huskers opened the day with an event crown from the men's decathlon on Saturday and added five more event titles as the championships came to a close.
Senior Ashley Miller led the Huskers with two conference championships, one in the 800 meters and one in the 1,500 meters. With her event crowns, Miller is now a four-time conference champion at Nebraska.
The Husker women were down 111-110 to Ohio State entering the final event of the day. However, NU could not edge past the Buckeyes in the final race, as the Ohio State women claimed the women's title with 117 points and the Huskers tied with Illinois for second-place with 110 points. The Husker men led Wisconsin 114-113.50 heading into the final event. The Huskers could not overcome the effort by the host Badgers and fell to second in the team standings as Wisconsin won the men's team title with 121 points and Nebraska totaled 115.50 points.
Miller won her first title of the championships with a time of 4:16.53 in the women's 1,500 meters. She followed that race with a first-place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 2:06.67. She also competed in the women's 5,000 meters, finishing sixth with a time of 16:39.07.
Miles Ukaoma took home his first conference title with a personal-best time in the men's 400 meter hurdles. He posted a time of 49.23 in the event, bettering his previous best of 50.52.
The Husker women produced a solid start in the jumps on Sunday as Anna Weigandt took the triple jump event title and Mara Griva finished second. Weigandt produced a jump of 42-6 1/4 (12.96) on her fourth attempt to secure her first conference crown. Griva recorded a leap of 42-5 1/4 (12.93) on her final attempt, finishing second. Ellie Ewere also recorded a sixth-place finish for Nebraska with a personal-best jump of 41-8 3/4 (12.72).
In the men's triple jump, Chris Phipps tallied a second-place finish behind a leap of 52-4 3/4 (15.97). Patrick Raedler followed him with a personal-best jump of 51-3 (15.62) for third-place.
Continuing the Huskers' success in the field events, Marusa Cernjul finished first in the women's high jump with a personal-best mark of 6-0 (1.83). She recorded the jump on her second to last attempt, sealing the victory for Nebraska. She is the first Husker outdoor high jump champion since 2008.
Luke Pinkelman, the 2012 Big Ten Indoor shot put champion, earned a second-place finish in the men's shot put with a season-best throw of 65-8 1/4 (20.02). Austin Braman recorded a throw of 197-11 (60.33) in the javelin to secure a fourth-place finish for the Huskers.
Breanna Bussel, the 2012 Big Ten indoor pole vault champion on the women's side, finished fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 13-4 1/2 (4.08). Maggie Maher finished sixth with a vault of 13-0 3/4 (3.98), while Cami Jiskra recorded a seventh-place finish with a mark of 13-0 3/4.
A day after the Husker men finished second and third in the discus, Morgan Wilken posted a fourth-place finish in the women's discus with a throw of 176-1 (53.67). She recorded the throw on her second attempt to secure the fourth-place finish for the Huskers.
Mara Weekes recorded a time of 11.79 in the women's 100 meters for fourth. Ohio State won the event with a sweep of the first, second and third spots. On the men's side, Tim Thompson finished fifth with a time of 10.60, while Dexter McKenzie notched a sixth-place finish with a time of 10.64. Weekes went on to take eighth in the women's 200 meters with a time of 23.98.
Behind Miller's 800 meter victory, Blaire Dinsdale recorded a fourth-place finish with a time of 2:07.09. Erica Hamik finished ninth with a time of 2:11.62.
Mila Andric finished seventh in the women's 100 meter hurdles, posting a time of 13.92. In the men's 100 meter hurdles, Miles Ukaoma led the Huskers with a fourth-place finish and a personal-best time of 13.94. Tibor Koroknai recorded a time of 14.58 for eighth in the event. Andric recorded a seventh-place finish in the 400 meter hurdles, posting a time of 59.99.
The men's 4x100 meter relay team recorded a third-place finish with a time of 40.10, tying their season-best time set at the Arkansas Spring Invitational. The women finished fifth with a season-best time of 46.14.
The Huskers will now turn their attention to the NCAA West Regional on the campus of the University of Texas, May 24-26.
