Wright Leads Huskers at Chip-N Club

Lincoln - Katelyn Wright produced back-to-back rounds of 76 to close the first day in a tie for sixth at Nebraska's Chip-N Club Invitational at the Country Club of Lincoln Monday.

Wright, a junior from Incline Village, Nev., fired a 36-hole total of 152 on the par-72, 6,075-yard layout at the Country Club to help the Husker women's golf team close the day in seventh at 630 (317-313).

Missouri leads Nebraska's 13-team season-opening tournament with a two-round score of 611 (299-312), while defending Chip-N Club team champion SMU is just three shots back of the Tigers at 614 (304-310). Iowa and North Dakota State enter Tuesday's final round in a tie for third at 624, just six strokes ahead of the Huskers.

Morgan Smejkal joined Wright in the individual top 20 by closing the day at 157. Smejkal, a redshirt freshman from Columbus, Neb., playing in the first collegiate round of her career, opened with an 80 before producing a solid 77 in the second round. She enters Tuesday's final 18 holes in a four-way tie for 20th.

Junior Steffi Neisen, who joined Wright as the only Huskers to ever play a round of collegiate golf before Monday, is tied for 24th. The native of New Prague, Minn., managed rounds of 80 and 78 to close the day at 158.

Cassie Deeg, a true freshman from Hugo, Minn., ended her first day of collegiate golf in a tie for 38th at 163 (81-82). Deeg played out of the No. 1 spot in the Husker lineup after earning that position in pre-tournament qualifying.

Redshirt freshman Jackie O'Doherty from Lincoln ended her first competitive rounds of college golf in a tie for 43rd in the 84-player field. The Lincoln East graduate managed rounds of 82 and 83 to close at 165.

Redshirt freshman Cassidy Stelzmiller (89-81-170) and true freshman Hannah Luebke (88-87-175) rounded out the NU contingent on the day. In all, five Huskers competed for the first time at the collegiate level on the first day of the tournament.

North Dakota State's Amy Anderson heads into the final round atop the individual leaderboard. Anderson, who won medalist honors at the Chip-N Club Invitational in both 2009 and 2010, owns a three-stroke lead over Kansas State's Carly Ragains and Missouri's Katherine Hepler. Anderson, who was the tournament runner-up in 2011, fired rounds of 74 and 73 to close at 147.

Defending tournament champion Felicia Espericueta from SMU withdrew from the first round after her first nine holes on Monday. She returned to the course for the start of the second round and fired a solid 76 for the Mustangs.

The Chip-N Club Invitational concludes Tuesday with 18 holes beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring will be available at GolfStat.com.
