White Team Dominates First Intrasquad

Lincoln, Neb. - Nebraska's men's gymnastics team completed their first preseason intrasquad meet on Sunday. The two-time NCAA top ten team performed routines on floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar.

Head Coach Chuck Chmleka said the first meet was critical for younger athletes, including freshmen Coleman Tokar, Ethan Lottman and Sam Chamberlain. Through the informal, two-day competition, freshmen and redshirts faced their nerves without the pressure of a regular season meet.

Judges scored teams on hits on each event. The White Team rose to the occasion, finishing just above the Red Team.

The Huskers impressed on all events individually, but saw a strong vaulting core performance. Each of the eight vaulters attempted a vault with a start value of 15.2 or higher. Three gymnasts finished the event posting a 15.0 or higher. Grant Perdue, the Big Red's only All American, claimed the top spot with a 15.25. He took the title on floor exercise as well.

"It's probably one of the strongest group of vaulters we've ever seen," said assistant coach John Robinson.

Team co-captain and NU's first Big Ten medalist Eric Schryver claimed the top spot on pommel horse, while specialist Donovan Arndt took the lead on rings and sophomore Josh Ungar impressed on high bar.

Junior Wyatt Aycock returned to all-around competition, along with teammate CJ Schaaf. Aycock excelled in all six events, claiming the all around title, as well as the lead on parallel bars.

The Huskers plan to host another intrasquad meet before they begin their regular season at the Rocky Mountain Open on Jan. 12, 2013 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Nebraska's debuts at home on January 27 against the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames. The meet will begin at 1 p.m. CST at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
