Former Nebraska women's golfer Madeleine Sheils shot a four-round total of 293 to tie for 53rd and advance to Stage II at the LPGA Qualifying School on Friday in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Sheils, a four-year starter for the Huskers from 2008-09 through 2011-12 from Boise, Idaho, produced a final-round 74 on the Champions Course (par 72, 6,389 yards) on Friday at LPGA International. Her final round followed rounds of 74, 70 and 75 over four days of competition that began with nearly 250 players.
Sheils, who was a first-team All-Big Ten performer and advanced to the 2012 NCAA Central Regional for the Huskers as a senior, secured her spot in at least two more rounds of golf in Stage I Qualifying. The top-60 players and ties following four rounds of play will advance into Qualifying Stage II.
Moriya Jutanugarn won the 72-hole even with a 15-under-par 273, while Garrett Phillips finished second at 274.
The top-60 players in Stage I Qualifying advance to another 72-hole tournament at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla., Oct. 9-12. The top 70 and ties from Stage II will advance into the final Qualifying Tournament Stage III.
The final Stage III Q-school will be contested over 90 holes Nov. 28 through Dec. 2, on both the Champions and Legends courses at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. Top finishers in the final stage will earn 2012 LPGA membership (total number of cards TBD) and all others who make the cut will receive Symetra Tour status.
