Nebraska Fall 4-3 In Tough Battle Against Utah

Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska men’s tennis team (7-5, 0-0) lost by the slimmest of margins to Utah (10-2, 0-0 Pac-12) in a seven-match shootout that resulted in a 4-3 final score. The Huskers went down early in doubles but pulled the match back twice in singles to make the score 3-3, leaving the match up to the final singles spot. The last singles match was captured by the Utes, giving them their tenth win on the season.

Beginning the match at doubles, Utah grabbed the first win with Cedric Willems and Slim Hamza overthrowing Nebraska’s Brandon Videtich and Bradford Zitsch 8-2 at the No. 1 position. At the No. 3 spot, NU’s Dusty Boyer and Scott Elsass outlasted the Utes’ Alejandro Medinilla and Matt Cowley 8-4 to even the doubles at one apiece. The doubles point was decided at the No. 2 when Utah’s Devin Lane and Ben Tasevac ousted the Huskers’ Marc Herrmann and Beau Treyz 8-6.

Down 1-0 going into singles, Nebraska tied up the score at the No. 3 position when Tom Blackwell toppled Utah’s Medinilla 6-4, 6-2 to make the score 1-1. The score got pushed to 2-2 when the Utes’ Lane defeated the Huskers’ Vasileios Stavropoulos 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 5 before the Big Red brought it back at the No. 4 when Andrew Dzulynsky outpaced Utah’s Willems 6-3, 6-2.

Nebraska took their first lead when Boyer knocked off Utah’s No. 110-ranked Hamza at the No. 1 by a score of 7-6 (8-6), 6-2. The match was put back into a deadlock at the No. 6 spot when the Utes’ Cowley narrowly edged the Huskers’ Charlie Shin 6-4, 7-5. The match was decided at the No. 2 singles when Utah’s Tasevac grabbed the win in a three-set thriller over Nebraska’s Herrmann 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

“It was a tough loss tonight but we have to give credit to Utah as they wanted it a little more in the end,” Nebraska Coach Kerry McDermott said. “We had a few guys back down and we battled hard but came up short. It was a good college match and it hurts to be on the losing end but we need to learn from this and get ready quickly for North Dakota and Drake on Sunday.”

Next up for the Huskers is a double-header on Sunday when Nebraska hosts North Dakota at 8 a.m. and No. 45 Drake at 3 p.m. The spring time change goes into effect Saturday night so set your clocks ahead an hour to not miss the matches. Go Big Red!
