NU Set For Double-Header at Home

NU Doubles Up Against Bluejays and No. 49 Cardinals

The No. 59 Huskers welcome No. 49-ranked Louisville and unranked Creighton to the Nebraska Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, in non-conference dual matches. The Huskers sit at 3-2 overall, with 2-2 against ranked teams including a 1-1 mark at the ITA Kick-off Weekend event in Los Angeles where they were able to grab a 4-1 victory over fellow Big Ten members Wisconsin.

Nebraska duo Marc Herrmann and Beau Treyz have been impressive at No. 2 doubles this spring with a 4-1 overall. During the ITA Kick-off event, Herrmann and Treyz secured a win over No. 33 ranked Hugo Dojas and Maxime Hinnisdaels of Texas Tech. The Nebraska pair have performed fantastic this season with an outstanding 12-3 overall and secured the Big Ten Indoors Championships Tournament doubles title during the fall preseason.

Herrmann played his first match at No. 1 singles in their previous win over Denver, where he knocked off the No. 86-ranked Henry Craig. The Huskers are 2-2 against ranked opponents suffering losses to No. 36 Florida State and No. 53 Texas Tech before toppling No. 66 Wisconsin and No. 52 Denver. The only freshman to participate this spring so far is Vasileios Stavropoulos, who holds a 2-1 singles record.

Huskers In The ITA National Rankings

Nebraska remain No. 59 in the ITA Top 75 after its 3-2 start to the season. The national ITA Top 75 rankings were released on Tuesday, Feb. 4 and did not release a new list on Feb. 11 due to the National Indoor Men’s Championships.

The Big Red are one of 11 Big Ten teams in the ITA Top 75. Nebraska is joined by No. 5 Ohio State, No. 22 Illinois, No. 30 Northwestern, No. 31 Michigan, No. 39 Minnesota, No. 50 Michigan State, No. 57 Indiana, No. 58 Penn State, No. 70 Wisconsin and No. 75 Purdue. The Huskers are the ninth-highest ranked Big Ten team.

Scouting the Louisville Cardinals

The No. 49 Cardinals are 5-1 coming off of a 4-1 loss to North Carolina to face the No. 59-ranked Huskers. Louisville went 15-13 overall in 2013 and lost their only conference match to Notre Dame 5-2. The Cardinals are ranked No. 49 with no ranked singles players and one ranked doubles pair in No. 50 Albert Wagner and Alex Gornet. The last time these two teams met was Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013 in the Huskers season opener, which ended in a 6-1 win for the Cardinals. NU and Louisville were ranked 74 and 34 at the time of the match, respectively.

Scouting the Creighton Bluejays

The Bluejays have only played one match this spring that resulted in a 4-3 victory over UMKC, putting them at 1-0 coming to Nebraska to face the No. 59 Huskers. Creighton went 7-11 overall in 2013, losing all five of their conference matches. CU isn’t ranked as a team and has no ranked singles players and no ranked doubles pairs. The last time the two teams met was Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013 which resulted in a 6-1 victory for the Huskers. Neither of the teams were ranked at the time of the match.

Looking Ahead

Following this weekend, Nebraska hits the road for a four-match spell. The Huskers see a road trip on Feb. 22-23 to face UAB and Georgia State followed by a visit to Ithaca, N.Y. to challenge Monmouth and Cornell, with match times yet to be determined.
