Martinez Earns National Honor

By NU Athletic Communications

Lincoln - Nebraska junior quarterback Taylor Martinez earned another honor for his performance against Southern Miss as he was named the Capital One Cup Impact Performance of the Week on Thursday.

Martinez won with over 41 percent of the fan voting from a field which also included Andre Ellington (Clemson), Marqise Lee (USC) and Braxton Miller (Ohio State).

The Husker signal caller from Corona, Calif., completed 26 of 34 passes for 354 yards and five touchdowns in Nebraska's 49-20 win in the season opener over Southern Miss. Martinez tied or set career bests in both passing yards and touchdowns, as he found 10 different receivers in Saturday's win. He guided the Huskers to their 27th consecutive season-opening win, as Nebraska racked up 632 yards of total offense, NU's best single-game total since 2007.

It was the second weekly honor Martinez earned this week, as shared the Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week with Michigan State's Le'Veon Bell.
Martinez and the Huskers, who are ranked 16th and 14th in this week's polls, head west this weekend, as they take on UCLA Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. (central) in a game broadcast nationally on FOX.
