Huskers Dominate Sooners in 3-0 Sweep
Lincoln, Neb.- The No. 1 Nebraska volleyball team (6-0) was truly the more dominant team on Thursday night as the Huskers swept the Oklahoma Sooners 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-16) in front of 4,023 fans at the NU Coliseum.
The Huskers opened the 2012 Ameritas Players Challenge with staggering numbers, as Hannah Werth led the team with 14 kills on 24 swings for a season-high .542 hitting percentage. She also posted 13 digs, marking her sixth double-double of the 2012 season. Meghan Haggerty proved to be nearly perfect with nine kills on 11 swings, recording no errors and a season-high hitting percentage of .818. She also tabbed five total blocks on the evening. Both Morgan Broekhuis and Hayley Thramer posted seven kills, while Thramer also recorded five blocks.
Nebraska hit .383 as a team on Thursday night, holding Oklahoma to a .068 hitting percentage. The Huskers also out-dug OU 41-30 and out-blocked the Sooners 10-6.
The Sooners opened the match on fire, taking an early 7-4 lead over Nebraska. A service ace by Haggerty eventually tied the set at 10 points apiece, while back-to-back errors by Oklahoma gave Nebraska a 13-10 lead. The Huskers scored six consecutive points, aided by two kills from Broekhuis. Haggerty and Broekhuis teamed up for a double-stuff block to help Nebraska to a 23-14 advantage, as the Huskers went on to take the first set 25-14.
Werth led Nebraska in the first set with six kills on seven attempts. Cook notched 12 assists, while the Huskers hit .303 for the set. Nebraska out-dug OU 16-14 and out-blocked the Sooners 3-2. Oklahoma hit just .094 in the first set.
Nebraska did not hold back in the second set, taking a 4-0 lead on a kill by Thramer. A 6-0 run gave Nebraska an 11-3 advantage, while the Huskers opened it up to take an 11 point lead at 17-6. Oklahoma would hardly get out of single digits, as Nebraska closed out OU with five-straight points to win the set 25-11.
Mancuso guided Nebraska in the second set with five kills, while Thramer and Haggerty both had three kills and two blocks each. Cook paced the Husker offense with 11 assists, while Nebraska hit .483 for the set. Nebraska notched 15 digs and four team blocks as the Sooners had 11 team digs and zero team blocks.
Mancuso led Nebraska early in the third set with a string of serves that resulted in three service aces and a 9-2 lead for NU. Haggerty punched in a kill, helping Nebraska to a 15-5 advantage, while Alicia Ostrander came in off the bench to aid Nebraska with a kill, making it 18-9, Huskers. A kill by Werth gave NU a 20-12 lead as NU went on to close out the third set 25-16.
Werth notched six kills in the third set, while Haggerty had four of her own. Cook posted 13 assists, as Nebraska tabbed 10 team digs and three team blocks. Nebraska hit .375 in the set, while OU hit .120.
The Huskers return to action tomorrow as they face Duquesne in the second day of play at the Ameritas Players Challenge. Nebraska will meet the Dukes at 4 p.m., while Kentucky and Oklahoma will take the court at 6 p.m.
