The Huskers head on the road to participate in the ITA/USTA Women's Central Region Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla., hosted by the University of Tulsa this weekend Oct. 19-22.
This annual tournament, which is being held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center features almost 100 players from 19 various universities across the Central Region including Big Ten rivals Iowa and Minnesota. Champions of the Central Region Tournament earn an automatic bid to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 8-11 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. .
Nebraska freshman Lauren Wagner played in the singles qualifying draw today looking to advance to the singles main draw that begins Friday morning. Requiring two victories to advance, Wagner fell short of that mark falling in the first round of the draw to Arkansas State's Janie Nowland 0-6, 4-6.
Wagner ended her singles play in the qualifying consolation round rolling over Central Arkansas' Bianca Strukeli in a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Wagner continues play Friday in the doubles main draw.
The entire Nebraska roster of eight players will participate in the event. All but senior Mary Weatherholt will play in the singles main draw. Seniors Patricia Veresova, Janine Weinreich, and Stefanie Weinstein enter the tournament seeded No. 4, No. 5, and No. 16, respectively.
In the first round of the singles main draw beginning Friday morning, Veresova faces Missouri's Maria Christensen while Weinreich heads against Drake's Nell Boyd. Weinstein is slotted to face Missouri's Rachel Stuhlmann as junior Maike Zeppernick goes against Kansas' Maria Jose Cardona. Sophomore Izabella Zgierska plays Kansas' Maria Belen Luduena while freshman Maggy Lehmicke faces Oklahoma State's Meghan Blevins.
Weatherholt joins in the action for the doubles main draw partnering with Veresova seeded at No. 6. The other three duos are No. 4 seeded Weinreich/Weinstein, Lehmicke/Zgierska, and Zeppernick/Wagner. The seeded Veresova/Weatherholt and Weinstein/Weinreich pairs receive a first round bye and begin play in the second round of the doubles draw.
In the first round, Lehmicke/Zgierska face South Dakota State's Jenny Blackburne and Florencia Magni while Zeppernick/Wagner heads against Southern Illinois' Natasha Tomishima and Jennifer Dien.
