Las Cruces, N.M. - Freshman Kolton Lapa fired two subpar rounds at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate on Monday to lead the Nebraska men's golf team to sixth-place position with 18 holes to play.
The Huskers opened Monday's first round with a 287 before posting 285 in the second round. Nebraska's 572 total after 36 holes is seven strokes off the pace, which is set by Wichita State. Kansas' Chris Gilbert and UNLV's Blake Biddle are tied for the individual lead at 6-under-par 136.
Lapa is three shots off the individual lead at 3-under-par 139. The Mesa, Ariz., native shot an opening-round 70 before a 69 in the second round. Lapa is in a three-way tie for third with UNLV's Kevin Penner and Texas State's Juan Diego Plascenia.
Sophomore Ross Dickson carded the second-best NU score on Monday with 143 after 36 holes. Dickson shot a 72 in the first round before a 71 in the second round. He is tied for 17th with 18 holes to play.
Matt Record is tied for 34th at 146 strokes. The junior from Scottsdale, Ariz., shot a pair of 73s on Monday.
Sitting in a tie for 62nd is fellow junior Manuel Lavin, who posted 79 in the first round before responding with a 72. His 36-hole total is at 151.
Neil Dufford, the lone senior in the Husker lineup in New Mexico, is tied for 66th. Dufford shot a 72 in the first round and an 80 in the second round. He is one stroke behind Lavin at 152.
